What can we do ?

The best thing about a holiday is to experience different things from those we are used to at home. In France the way of life, the people, the eating, the towns & villages, the chateaux, the markets and the fêtes are all part of this.

We will supply you with information on specific attractions relevant to the time you spend here. The gîte is well stocked with guides and booklets on the towns and chateaux and the information centres of the region are here to help you have a happy stay. Here is just a taster of what you can do from Niollet.

Champigny-sur-Veude.

The nearest village to Niollet is one kilometre away. It is notable for the 16th & 17th century stone cottages and the remains of the chateau. Its chapel with the fine Renaissance stained glass windows was saved from the cardinal by papal order. Although small there is almost two of everything here; two rivers, two fishing lakes, two hairdressers, two boulangeries. You even have the choice between which of the two bars you can sit outside.

Countryside.

This area is ideal for walking and cycling. (Bicycles can be hired in the village) The lanes are quiet and the wildlife abounds. Many of the birds you will see are rare in England and it is easy to catch a glimpse of deer, wild boar and barn martins. Fishing permits can be arranged for the local lakes and rivers and canoe trips on the Vienne can be organised. Horse riding is available locally and the nearest golf course is only thirty minutes away by car Golf de Loudun-Roiffe.

Local Towns & Villages.

Niollet is 15 kilometres from the historic and beautiful fortress town of Chinon. Richelieu is 8 kilometres to the south. Both have a wealth of attractions, architecturally and gastronomically. Tours, Saumur & Poitiers are less than an hour away by car and many of the great Loire chateaux are within striking distance. The Abbey at Fontevraud close by, where two english kings are buried is a place with great atmosphere.

History.

The local towns and villages have been shaped by many famous people during the centuries. Balzac, Rabelais, Descartes, Joan of Arc, Agnès Sorel, Richard the Lion Heart, Henry ll and Cardinal Richelieu to mention a few have all left their mark for you to discover.

The Chateaux.

Our house at Niollet is close to so many beautiful and interesting chateaux. Many of these will be well known to you because they are synonymous with the Loire Valley. You will discover fascinating stories, archtecture and gardens. There are also castles which are less well known which have tales to tell. You may be shown round by eccentric owners for example, look at strange art exhibitions or be able to discuss with a count or countess the best way to find truffles. You can stand by the desk that Balzac used to write his novels, look at the jewels of Mrs Simpson or peep over the wall of the chateau of a Rolling Stone. Do you really think a week is long enough?

Food & Drink

The restaurants are varied and easily located in the nearby towns and villages. The famous local wines complement the food. Many of the villages and towns have their markets and fêtes where the traders love to welcome visitors. This is a region where the french passion for food and wine is obvious.

Futuroscope.

Only 3/4 hr away by car all our guests who have visited (young and older) have said that they have spent an enjoyable day there. The attractions are varied and offer enjoyment for the whole day ending in a spectacular evening music and light display.
