We have enjoyed renovating this house. From the beginning we knew we would like to rent the property as a holiday gîte but the care and love that we have invested in the building has made it feel like our own home. Those who have stayed here remark on the calmness and the sense of well being they have experienced. We hope you too will enjoy your stay.
The house is ideal for a large family of eight people. However we often find that two families enjoy holidaying together. Because of the layout of the property it is easy for such groups to find their own space. The bedrooms are situated at each end of the property and reached by separate stairs and there are two spacious lounges. The kitchen and laundry rooms are central in the house and the whole comes togther with the almost baronial dining room.
Many of the walls are of exposed stone which has been carefully pointed. Some of the flag stone flooring we think is original and there are two very old open fireplaces. The high ceilings and beams in these well proportioned rooms give an open feel to the house.
Downstairs Sitting Rooms.
There are two lounge areas, one at either end of the house. The lounge next to the kitchen we normally think of as a games room. A cupboard here is well stocked with all sorts of games. It is light and airy, has stained oak beams and french doors that open on to the garden. Perhaps whilst half the family play here others can relax at the other end of the house in comfy arm chairs. Here the room has a more traditional old world feel with its thick stone walls, flagstones and beams. It too has french doors that open on to the garden and terrace. There is satellite TV with Canal+ and a well stocked book case.
Kitchen
Is well equipped and modern, situated between the lounge and the dining room and with direct access through the stable door to the shady pic-nic spot under the Catalpa tree.
Laundry Room.
A separate room with washing and drying facilities. Here as in the kitchen the floor is laid with old tomettes, salvaged from the barn.
(We fondly remember the hours of work it took scrubbing these tiles clean.)
Dining Room.
This room is almost baronial. The ceiling is set at the full height of the building, supported by old beams. The walls are of stone and there is a large open fire place. It is well lit and there is a large chandelier. High on the back wall is our stained glass window which we commissioned.
The oak table can seat twelve and whether you are sat there for breakfast or an evening banquet we are sure this is the room you will remember.
Bedrooms.
There are four bedrooms, two in the old house and two in what used to be the barn. They all have oak parquet floors and retain the charm of an old building.
In the old house the main bedroom is large and spacious. It has a bath and wash basin en-suite. It has a king sized bed and there is room here if required to put a cot or additional bed. Next door is a small bedroom equipped with bunk beds (but this could be swapped for a double bed).
At the barn end of the house there are two bedrooms. One with a double bed, the other with two single beds. These are pretty rooms and we have been able to retain the original beams in the walls and ceiling.
Bathrooms / Showers / WC
Downstairs is a shower room with WC and wash basin. The large bedroom has an en-suite bath and basin and shares a WC with the small bedroom.
In the barn end of the house is a bathroom with shower, bath, basin and WC. With two baths and two showers it shouldn't be a problem to keep clean and the morning queues should not be too long.
Garden and Swimming Pool
The south facing garden is completely walled. On warm sunny days it is a sun trap and the shade afforded by the Catalpa tree is often very welcome.
The small swimming pool is the main focus and the fact that it is not heated does not seem to deter most of our guests from practically living in it.
All Year Lets
A gas fired boiler provides central heating throughout the house. Coupled with the open fire this house is cosy and warm during the colder days.
